Are You Feeling Blue?

It is in the sea, it is in the sky. It is a masculine colour stereotypically. It is cold, calm and loyal. It is Royal, confident and intelligent.

The colour blue represents so much with such diversity. If it were a person, I could quite easily picture a male in his graduation robes with family all around him, though at the same time this colour could also be seen as a person who prefers his own company and who is cold towards others.

In the main, blue is a positive colour. It often represents such things as loyalty, wisdom, confidence, healing and stability. It is considered to be a great colour to boost state of mind and body and is often associated with calm and tranquil feelings.

It is typically a male colour though in later years, blue has become much more diverse among both males and females. It continues to hold onto that male side, though, and I think that it will perhaps always be considered a male colour above everything else. Steriotypes are difficult to drop, even through time.

Different shades of this colour can represent different things. For example, a dark blue shade may show much more softness to it opposed to a lighter shade which holds a much more serious tone to it. There are many different names to describe all of the many shades such as sky blue for a lighter shade, ultramarine which has a slight purple tint to it, and navy blue which is one of the darkest shades.

In some languages, there is no single word for this colour and in some countries, the same word is used to describe both blue and green (that could be confusing!)

To 'feel blue' means to feel sad. This could be were the sad aspect of the colour originally took this form, though other languages use this colour in speech for other things such as in Germany where to seem 'blue' means that a person seems drunk.

Blue is widely known as many things. It has many different faces depending on where in the world you are from and what you believe.

What does blue mean to you?
